What is the Pupil Premium Grant?

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is funding given to schools to help close the attainment gap between children from low-income and other disadvantaged families and their peers. Pupil Premium Grant is primarily aimed at pupils who are from low-income families and are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). This category now includes any child that has been registered for FSM in the past 6 years (known as ‘Ever 6’ FSM). This funding also covers Children Looked After (CLA), children adopted from care under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 and children who have left care under a Special Guardianship or Residence Order. Schools also receive a service premium for pupils whose parents either serve in the armed forces or are in receipt of a child pension from the ministry of Defence.

What is PE and Sport Premium?

The government has provided additional funding of £150 million per annum for each academic year since 2013/2014. The PE & Sports Premium Funding is given to schools to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – has been allocated to Primary School Headteachers.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools. Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day. The PE and sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils.

Guidance for schools on the funding, including details of funding allocations and advice on how to spend it, is available.
